Hotplate stuck on high or not heating? Test the energy regulator
An infinite switch, also called a simmerstat or energy regulator, controls heat by switching the element fully on and off in cycles. The higher the knob setting, the longer the on periods. Inside is a bimetal strip and a set of contacts that wear with years of switching. When it fails, the hotplate may only work on full, stay on even when turned to off, not heat at all, or cycle erratically so simmering is impossible. Burnt or loose terminals at the back of the switch, or a knob shaft that spins without the usual click, also point to the switch.

Replacing an infinite switch
Most cookers are hard-wired, so a licensed electrician should fit this switch with the circuit isolated at the switchboard.
