Product details

Genuine Electrolux thermocouple kit, part 4055980140, also referenced by the kit code 040215K. A thermocouple is the flame failure sensor on a gas burner, the small probe that sits in the flame and keeps the gas valve open while the burner is alight. Replace it when a burner lights but goes out as soon as you let go of the knob. Confirm the length and connection type against your old thermocouple before ordering.

Gas burner won't stay lit

When the flame heats the thermocouple tip, it generates a tiny voltage that holds a magnet in the gas valve open. If the flame goes out, the voltage drops away and the valve closes, cutting the gas. Over time the tip burns, the lead gets damaged or the connection at the valve loosens, and the voltage becomes too weak. The burner then lights but dies when the knob is released, or only stays on after holding the knob in for a long time. Check the tip is clean and sitting in the flame before replacing it.

Who should fit a thermocouple

Thermocouples are part of the gas safety system, so in Australia this is a job for a licensed gas fitter. Turn off the gas supply and isolate power to any ignition before work starts. The fitter will set the tip correctly in the flame, secure the connection at the valve, then leak test and check the flame failure works once the job is done.

Questions about this part

Can I fit the thermocouple myself?

Not legally in Australia. Gas safety parts must be installed by a licensed gas fitter, who will also test the burner, confirm the flame failure shuts off the gas and check for leaks once the new thermocouple is in.
