It's the element that sits behind the back panel around the oven fan and heats the air the fan pushes through the cavity. Note that 4055918231 does not interchange with element 85801220045065, even though the two can look similar, so check the number stamped on your old element before you buy.
Fan forced oven not heating
In fan forced mode the oven relies on this element and the fan working together. When the element fails, the fan still runs and the light stays on, but the oven stays cold or barely warms up. Sometimes the element breaks down to earth instead, which trips the safety switch the moment fan forced is selected while other functions still work. Look for a blistered, split or bulging section on the element, then confirm with a continuity and insulation test before ordering.

Changing a fan forced element
Turn the oven off at the switchboard, as most ovens are hard wired and the element terminals carry mains voltage. Have a licensed electrician do the work. The rear fan cover comes off to reach the element, and the terminals should be photographed before anything is disconnected. Some ovens need to come out of the cabinet to reach the terminal end. Refit the cover and test in fan forced mode.
