A coil hotplate heats when current flows through the resistance wire packed inside its sheath. Over time the sheath can blister, crack or burn through, often after a pot boils over. A failed hotplate stays cold on every setting, heats only in one section, glows unevenly or trips the safety switch when turned on. Sparking or a burning smell from under the coil needs attention straight away. If the other hotplates work normally, the fault is likely the element or its switch. Fitting the hotplate
