Top half of the agitator not turning?

Two-piece agitators have a lower section that swings back and forth and an upper auger section that should ratchet round in one direction, pulling clothes down into the wash. The cam and its dogs create that ratchet action. When the dogs wear or the cam cracks, the top section spins freely both ways or doesn't move at all. Clothes stop turning over, loads float on top, and washing results drop off. You may also hear clicking or grinding from inside the agitator during the wash.

Fitting the agitator cam

Unplug the washer before you start. Pull off the agitator cap, undo the bolt or retainer and lift the upper section away to reach the cam. Clean out soap scum and any broken dog fragments so nothing jams the new parts. If the dogs are worn too, replace them at the same time, then reassemble and turn the top by hand to check it ratchets one way only.
