Westinghouse gas knob loose or spinning?
The knob grips the flat on the gas valve spindle so you can push and turn it to light the burner and set the flame. A small insert or clip inside holds it on the spindle. Heat and cleaning sprays wear that grip, so the knob spins without turning the valve, falls off, or only works when pushed at an angle. A cracked knob can also make the flame setting marks hard to read. On a gas appliance the knob needs to sit fully on the spindle for safe, precise control, so replace a damaged one rather than making do.

Fitting the knob
Turn all burners off and let the cooktop cool. Pull the old knob straight off the spindle, then line the new knob up with the spindle's flat side and push it on squarely until it seats. Don't lever knobs off with a screwdriver, as you can scratch the panel or bend the valve spindle. If the spindle itself is loose or bent, have a licensed gas fitter look at the valve.
