Product details

Burner lights but goes out as soon as you release the knob? The thermocouple is the usual suspect, and 4055843132 is the genuine Electrolux thermocouple for the main burner of an Electrolux group gas barbecue. It's part of the flame failure safety system that cuts the gas if the flame goes out. A separate thermocouple serves the rear burner. Gas work must be done by a licensed gas fitter in Australia.

Why a gas burner won't stay lit

A thermocouple is a probe that sits in the flame and produces a tiny voltage when heated. That voltage holds the flame failure valve open. When you push and turn the knob you hold the valve open manually, and once the probe is hot enough it takes over. If the tip is burnt, bent out of the flame or covered in grease, or the lead is damaged, the voltage drops and the gas shuts off. The classic sign is a burner that ignites but dies within seconds of letting go, or one that cuts out randomly mid-cook.

Fitting a burner thermocouple

Turn off the gas supply at the cylinder or isolation valve first. Thermocouple replacement involves the gas valve and must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. The fitter will position the tip in the flame exactly as the original, tighten the connection at the valve correctly, and leak test the system. Before booking them, it's worth cleaning the probe tip and checking it sits in the flame.

Questions about this part

Can I clean the thermocouple instead of replacing it?

Sometimes. Grease or carbon on the tip can stop it heating properly, and a gentle clean with fine steel wool may bring it back. If the burner still won't stay lit, or the tip is burnt or cracked, a new thermocouple is needed.
