Reverse cycle air con stuck in heating or cooling?

A 4-way valve reverses the direction of refrigerant flow, which turns the indoor coil from a cooler into a heater. A solenoid coil on the valve moves a slide inside when the system changes mode. If the slide sticks or leaks internally, the unit may only cool, only heat, blow lukewarm air in both modes, or make a loud whoosh that doesn't settle. A failed solenoid coil can cause the same symptoms and is a much cheaper fix, so it should be tested first.
