Washing machine not filling or water leaking into the tub
A solenoid on the valve opens when the control calls for water and snaps shut when the fill is done. Many top loaders use one single valve for hot and another for cold, so a fault on one may only affect warm or cold washes. When the coil burns out, the machine sits waiting to fill, hums, or times out with no water. When the valve fails to close, water keeps running into the tub even with the machine off, which can overflow. Weak or slow filling is often a blocked inlet screen, so clean that before changing the valve.

Swapping a single inlet valve
Turn both taps off and unplug the machine. Remove the hose from the faulty valve and open the cabinet or back panel to reach it. Note which valve is hot and which is cold, and photograph the wiring before disconnecting it. Fit the new valve with its outlet pointing the same way, secure the internal hose with its clamp, reconnect the wiring and test for leaks with the taps turned on slowly.

How do I know if it's the hot or cold valve that's failed?
Run a warm wash and a cold wash and watch the fill. If one temperature never arrives, that valve or its wiring is the suspect. A multimeter test across the coil terminals will confirm a burnt out solenoid.
