Top loader washes but won't spin properly? Check the pawl clutch

Inside the drive of these top loaders, the pawl clutch uses a pawl, a small catch, that engages and releases to change how the bowl is driven. That is how the machine switches between the wash action and the spin. When the pawl or the clutch housing wears, the machine may agitate normally but fail to spin, spin slowly, leave the clothes soaking wet, or make a clicking or ratcheting noise from under the bowl. A worn clutch can also slip, so the problem is often worse with a full load than a light one.

Before you replace the clutch

Unplug the washer and turn off both taps. Getting to the clutch usually means removing the bowl or working under the machine, so take photos at each stage and keep the fasteners in order.
