What the agitator cap does on a Simpson or Westinghouse top loader
The cap closes off the top of the agitator and the dispenser cup that sits just beneath it. It holds the dispenser in position while the agitator works back and forth, and it gives clothes a smooth surface to move against instead of an open hole. Over the years the plastic can crack, the locating tabs can wear and caps often go missing after the agitator has been removed for a service. A cap that rattles, lifts off mid wash or has split, or a dispenser that no longer works as it should, are the usual reasons to replace it.
