Medium gas burner lighting poorly? Check the cap
The burner cap sits on top of the burner head and spreads the gas into an even ring of flame. Being enamelled, it is tough, but the coating can chip, crack or burn through, and a dropped cap can warp so it no longer sits flat. A damaged or misaligned cap causes uneven, yellow or lifting flames, a burner that is slow to light, and black soot marks on the base of saucepans. Food baked onto the cap can block the flame path too.

Fitting the burner cap
Wait until the cooktop is cold. Lift off the old cap and wipe the burner head clean, making sure the flame ports and ignition electrode are free of food. Sit the new cap squarely so it is centred and does not rock, then light the burner and check for a steady blue flame. Ongoing flame problems should be checked by a licensed gas fitter.
