Uneven or yellow burner flame? Check the burner crown
The burner crown is the slotted ring that sits on the burner base and spreads the gas into an even circle of small flames, with the burner cap resting on top. Crowns take direct heat and boil-overs, and over time the ports clog with food, warp, corrode or crack. Signs of a worn crown include a ragged or patchy flame, flames lifting off the burner or burning yellow, a burner that is slow to ignite, or a crown that rocks instead of sitting flat. Cleaning the ports helps if they are just blocked, but a damaged crown should be replaced.

Fitting the burner crown
Turn the burner off and let it cool completely. Lift off the trivet, burner cap and old crown, and clean the burner base and igniter tip. Seat the new crown so it locates properly and sits flat, then refit the cap. Light the burner and check for a steady blue flame all round. If the flame still looks wrong, have a licensed gas fitter check the injector and gas pressure.
