Small gas burner lighting unevenly? Check the cap
The burner cap sits on top of the burner head and spreads the gas evenly to the flame ports around its edge. If the cap is cracked, chipped, warped or sitting crooked, the flame comes out uneven, lifts off the burner, burns yellow or won't light all the way around. Boil-overs and harsh cleaning can damage the enamel, and a cap dropped on a hard floor often chips. Never run the burner with the cap missing or out of place. If the flame is still poor with a new cap, the burner head or jet may need attention from a gas fitter.

Fitting the burner cap
Turn the burner off and let the cap and burner head cool. Clean any spilled food or grease from the burner head so the ports are clear and dry. Sit the new cap squarely on the head, making sure it locates properly and doesn't rock. Light the burner and look for an even blue flame all the way round. If the flame stays uneven, have a licensed gas fitter check the burner.
