Gas oven won't light? Check the spark plug
The spark plug sits beside the oven burner and fires a spark across to it when the ignition is pressed. That spark lights the gas so the burner can take over. Grease, spills and burnt residue on the oven floor can coat the electrode, and its ceramic insulator can crack with heat, sending the spark to the wrong place or weakening it until it can't light the gas. You may hear clicking with no flame, smell gas before it catches or get delayed lighting with a small whoosh. If you smell gas, stop and call a licensed gas fitter.

Who should replace the oven spark plug
The spark plug is mounted at the oven burner, so in Australia it should be replaced by a licensed gas fitter. Before any work, the gas is turned off at the cooker isolation valve and the power is switched off at the wall. The fitter will position the new electrode with the correct gap to the burner, secure the lead and test that the oven lights quickly and smoothly.
