Product details

Part 4055562674 is a genuine MP101 energy regulator, sometimes called a simmerstat or infinite switch, with a pilot light contact built in. It controls the heat on an electric hotplate or cooktop element and is used across Westinghouse, Chef and Electrolux cookers, including the WLE527WA and PXR688W, the EHC643S and the EUC5110W. You may also see it listed as 0534001654.

Hotplate stuck on high or not heating at all

Instead of a thermostat, an electric hotplate uses an energy regulator that cycles the element on and off. Turn the knob up and the on periods get longer, turn it down and they get shorter. Inside, a small heater and bimetal strip work a set of contacts, and those contacts eventually burn or weld. A worn regulator shows up as a hotplate that stays flat out wherever the knob is set, one that won't heat at all, or a knob that has to be jiggled to work. The pilot contact switches the indicator light, so a light that never comes on can point to it too.

Fitting a new energy regulator

This is mains wiring, so the cooktop must be isolated at the switchboard and the job is best left to a licensed electrician. Label each wire against the terminal markings on the old regulator before removing it, and connect the new one in exactly the same pattern. Check the knob shaft lines up and the hotplate cycles on and off at a low setting.

Questions about this part

Do I replace one regulator or all of them?

Each hotplate has its own regulator, so you only need to replace the one controlling the faulty plate. If several plates have failed at once, have the wiring and supply checked as well.
