Burner won't stay lit? Check the thermocouple

The tip of the thermocouple sits in the flame and produces a tiny voltage as it heats up. That voltage holds the safety valve open. When the tip is worn, bent out of the flame or dirty, or the lead is damaged, the voltage drops and the valve closes. The classic sign is a burner that lights while you hold the knob in but goes out as soon as you let go. Before replacing it, check the tip is clean and sitting in the flame, and hold the knob in for 10 to 15 seconds when lighting.
