In a frost free fridge freezer, the damper opens and closes to control how much cold air moves from the freezer side into the fresh food compartment. Fridge too warm or freezing food? Check the damper
The damper is a small motorised flap in the air duct between the freezer and the fridge section. The control board drives it open when the fridge needs cooling and closed once it reaches temperature. If the motor fails or the flap jams, it can stay shut, leaving the fridge warm while the freezer works fine, or stay open and freeze lettuce, milk and drinks. Ice build-up around the damper can cause the same symptoms, so a full defrost is worth trying first.

Replacing the damper
Switch the fridge off at the wall and move the food to an esky or another fridge. The damper is usually behind a panel at the back of the fresh food compartment or near the freezer air duct. Photograph the wiring plug and any foam seals before removing it. Make sure the new damper sits square in its duct, then give the fridge several hours to settle.
