Behind the cover sits the evaporator, the coldest part of the system, along with the defrost heater and fan. The cover protects those parts, insulates them from the food space and channels cold air out through vents. If it cracks, warps or comes loose, air takes the wrong path and frost builds up. You might notice ice on the back wall, uneven temperatures, a fan scraping or water running where it shouldn't during defrost.

Removing and refitting the cover
Turn the fridge off at the wall and empty the compartment. If the evaporator is iced up, let it defrost fully first, with towels down to catch melt water. Undo the screws and release the clips, then disconnect any sensor, light or fan plugs carefully. Fit the new assembly, reconnect everything, and make sure the fan turns freely before restarting.
