Retractable rangehood not clearing smoke and grease?

In a slide-out rangehood the filter sits under the hood, right in the airflow when you pull the visor forward. Its four layers of metal mesh trap grease from cooking fumes before they reach the fan and motor. A filter that is clogged, bent or damaged lets grease through, cuts suction and makes the motor work harder and louder. Grease building up inside the hood is also a fire risk. If washing no longer clears it, or it won't sit flat in its frame, fit a new one.

Changing the filter

Switch the rangehood off first. Slide the visor out, then release the catch or clips and lower the filter out of the hood. Fit the new one the same way round and push it up until it is held firmly. Wash metal filters regularly in warm soapy water and let them dry fully before refitting, so grease never gets the chance to build up.
