A rangehood switch assembly takes mains power and sends it to the fan motor windings for each speed and to the lights. Grease and steam rise straight into it, so contacts gum up and buttons stick or stop latching. Typical faults are a fan that runs on only one speed, won't turn off, or won't start, lights that don't respond, or buttons that feel loose or won't stay down. Burnt marks on the terminals point to a failed contact. Check the motor capacitor and wiring too if the fan hums but won't spin.

Fitting the switch assembly
Turn the rangehood off and unplug it or isolate it at the circuit breaker. Hard-wired hoods need a licensed electrician.
