How a damaged burner cap upsets the flame on a gas cooktop
The cap sits on top of the burner crown and spreads the gas into an even ring of flame. Because the auxiliary burner is the one most people use for simmering sauces and warming pans, its cap takes plenty of knocks and boil-overs. A cap that is chipped, cracked or sitting crooked can give a lopsided or yellow flame, slow or patchy ignition, or a burner that only lights on one side. Swapping the burner cap
Make sure every burner is off and the cooktop has cooled. Lift off the trivet and the old cap, then wipe the crown and check the flame ports are free of food and grease. Seat the new cap so it sits flat and centred with no rocking. Light the burner and look for an even blue flame all the way round. If the flame stays uneven or you can smell gas, turn it off and call a licensed gas fitter.
