Push-fit fittings grip the tube with a collet, and a knock to that collet is all it takes to release the line. The 387-14 is a 1/4 inch locking clip that sits behind the collet and stops it moving, so the tube stays put. It's a small part worth fitting on every joint in a fridge water line or an under-sink filter install.
Stop push-fit fittings releasing behind the fridge
Behind a fridge, the water line gets bumped every time the fridge is moved for cleaning. Without a clip, pressure on the collet can release the joint and let the tube work loose and leak. That might show up as water pooling behind the fridge, a damp kickboard, or a dispenser that suddenly stops after the fridge was shifted. A clip on each joint also stops curious kids or pets pulling a line apart. Plumbers and appliance techs keep a handful in the van for every filter or fridge connection.

Fitting a locking clip
Make sure the tube is pushed fully home in the fitting first. Pull the collet out towards you so there's a gap between it and the fitting body, then snap the clip into that gap. With the clip in place the collet can't be pressed in. To remove the tube later, take the clip off first.
