Oven grill not working? The top element may have failed
The grill element is fixed to the roof of the oven cavity. It delivers direct top heat for grilling and browning, and in many ovens it also helps out on some conventional or fan functions. Grill elements run very hot and close to splatter, so they tend to fail sooner than other elements. Usual signs are a grill that stays dark, a top element that glows only in patches, food that will not brown on top, visible bubbles or a split in the sheath, or the safety switch tripping when the grill is selected.

Changing the grill element
Switch the oven off at the switchboard and let it cool. Hard-wired ovens need a licensed electrician for any wiring work. Support the element as you undo its fixings, since grill elements drop down once released, then label the wires at the back before disconnecting them. Fit the new element, make sure it sits clear of the oven roof and test the grill.
