The knob is the part your hand actually turns, and its plastic shaft grips the flat on the gas valve spindle behind the panel. Over years of heat and cleaning sprays, that grip can split or wear smooth. You then find the knob turns without lighting the burner, sits crooked, or pulls off with no effort, and the off position becomes hard to read. A new knob puts firm control back on the valve. Swapping the burner knob
Turn all burners off and let the cooktop cool. The knob pulls straight off its spindle. Note how the spring and collar sit behind the old knob and keep them in the same order, as a collar that is missing or reversed can stop the knob pushing in to light. Line up the flat, press the new knob home and test each position. Any work on the valve or gas line is a job for a licensed gas fitter.
