Turn every burner and control off and let the cooktop cool. Pull the old knob straight off without twisting. Check whether a spring clip or spacer stays on the spindle or comes away with the knob, and move it across if needed. Align the flat in the new knob with the spindle and press it home, then make sure it sits at the off position.
