A solid hotplate is a cast iron plate with the heating element sealed inside, and the cooktop control cycles it on and off to hold the heat you select. Changing the hotplate

Turn the cooker off at the switchboard and let the plate cool fully. Hotplates connect to the cooker's mains wiring, so the swap should be done by a licensed electrician. Photograph the terminal connections before removing the old plate, and make sure the new one sits level in the cooktop so spills cannot get underneath.
