Washing machine not heating or tripping the power?

During a warm wash the element heats the water while a temperature sensor tells the control when to stop. A failed element often goes unnoticed for a while, as cold washes still work. Signs include clothes not coming out clean on hot programs, cycles that take much longer than normal, a heating error, or the safety switch tripping when the wash starts heating. Hard water scale and lint build up on the element over time, and a split sheath lets water reach the wiring and cause leakage to earth.

Changing the washer element

Unplug the machine and turn off the taps. On most front loaders the element is reached through the back panel. Photograph the wiring, loosen the centre nut and ease the old element out, guiding it off its bracket inside the tub. Slide the new one in so it engages the same bracket, tighten the nut evenly to seal the gasket, and check for leaks on a warm wash.

Can I keep using the washer until the element arrives?

Cold programs will often still run, but if the safety switch trips when the machine starts, stop using it. An element leaking to earth can keep tripping the power, so leave the washer unplugged until the new part is fitted.
