Why your oven lamp needs its glass cover
The glass cover fits over the oven lamp inside the cavity. It shields the globe and its socket from fat splatter, steam and cleaning products. Covers crack from thermal shock when cold water or a wet cloth hits hot glass, and they're easy to drop or chip while changing a globe. Running the oven without one lets grease bake onto the globe and can damage the socket, which turns a cheap fix into a bigger repair. Replace a broken cover promptly.

Fitting the glass cover
Switch the oven off at the isolator and make sure it's completely cold. If the old cover is cracked, wear gloves and remove the pieces carefully. This is a good time to check the globe and replace it if it's blackened. Fit the new cover the same way the old one came off, firmly but without forcing it, and wipe off fingerprints before heating the oven.
