Product details
Bromic part 1811527 is a 2.2 litre nitrogen cylinder. Refrigeration and air conditioning technicians use nitrogen to pressure test new pipework for leaks and to flow through copper while brazing so the inside of the pipe doesn't scale. The cylinder needs a nitrogen regulator to control the outlet pressure, so make sure your regulator's fitting suits it before you order.
Why nitrogen matters on refrigeration jobs
Copper heated in air forms oxide scale on its inner wall. Once the system runs, that scale breaks loose and can block expansion valves, capillary tubes and filters. Flowing a gentle stream of nitrogen through the pipe while brazing keeps oxygen out and the bore clean. After brazing, nitrogen is used to pressure test the circuit, because it is inert and dry and won't react with oils. A pressure drop over the test period points to a leak that needs fixing before the system is evacuated and charged.

Using and storing the cylinder safely
Always fit a nitrogen regulator and never connect the cylinder straight to a system, as full cylinder pressure can burst components. Keep the cylinder upright and secured in transport and storage, away from heat. Open the valve slowly, leak check the connections and close it when you finish. Work on refrigerant circuits in Australia requires a refrigerant handling licence.
Questions about this part
Can I use oxygen or compressed air instead of nitrogen?
No. Oxygen can react violently with compressor oil, and compressed air carries moisture into the system. Nitrogen is inert and dry, which is why it is the standard gas for purging and pressure testing refrigeration and air conditioning pipework.
