Washing machine not filling or overfilling

The inlet valve is an electrically operated tap at the back of the machine. When the control calls for water, the solenoid opens and lets it through, then closes once the bowl has filled. A valve with a failed coil stays shut, so the machine won't fill at all, or only gets water from the other tap and washes everything hot or everything cold. A valve that sticks open, or has grit under its seal, does the opposite, letting water dribble in when the machine is off or overfilling the bowl. A leak from the valve body is another reason to swap it.

Swapping the inlet valve

Turn off both taps and pull the plug out of the wall before starting. Disconnect the inlet hose and catch any water left in it. The valve is usually reached by removing the rear panel or top cover. Take a photo of the wiring and the hose clamps, then transfer them to the new valve. Clean the filter screens in the hose ends, refit everything and check for leaks on the first fill.
