Product details
Westinghouse RJ series frost free fridges use a heater to clear ice from the evaporator, and 1760008390 is the genuine double pass heater kit for that job. The older Westinghouse number is 1433141, which may be the one printed on your old heater or in your service paperwork. Double pass refers to the element's layout, making two passes across the coil. Supplied as a kit, it's the part to order when the defrost heater has gone open circuit.
Signs the defrost heater has failed in a Westinghouse fridge
Frost free fridges build up ice on the evaporator coil every day. A timer or control switches the defrost heater on at intervals to melt it off, and the water drains away. When the heater fails, the ice keeps growing until air can no longer flow through the coil. The freezer may still feel cold at first, but the fridge section warms up, the back panel in the freezer frosts over, and food starts to spoil. A continuity test on the heater with the power off gives a quick answer, as an open reading confirms the fault.

Fitting the double pass heater kit
Unplug the fridge and empty the freezer before you begin. The heater usually sits on the evaporator behind the freezer back panel, so give any ice time to melt rather than chipping at the coil, which can pierce it. Note how the old heater is clipped and how its leads run before removing it. Fit the new one in the same position, reconnect, then run the fridge and check it defrosts normally over the next day.
Questions about this part
Does a new heater fix every fridge that frosts up?
No. Ice build up can also come from a faulty defrost timer, control board or termination thermostat. Test the heater for continuity first. If it reads open circuit, this kit is the fix. If it tests fine, look at the other defrost parts before buying.
