Westinghouse fridge too warm or freezing food? Check the thermostat
The thermostat senses temperature through a capillary tube and switches the compressor on and off to hold the setting on the dial. If its contacts stick closed, the compressor runs nonstop and food in the fridge section starts to freeze. If they fail open, the compressor never starts, so the cabinet slowly warms up while the light still works. Other clues include a dial that changes nothing, the compressor clicking on and off in quick bursts, or milk going off well before its date.

Swapping the thermostat
Turn the fridge off at the wall first. Pull the knob off, release the thermostat housing and note exactly where the capillary tube runs and how far it sits in its clip, since the new one must be placed the same way to read correctly. Photograph the wires before unplugging them. Allow the cabinet a few hours to settle after switching back on, then check it with a fridge thermometer.
