The drain pump empties the drum at the end of each wash and before every spin, pushing the water out through the drain hose. The housing holds the impeller and joins the pump to the sump and hose. When the pump fails, the machine may stop with water still in the drum, show a drainage fault, refuse to spin, or hum and grind without moving any water. Before replacing it, clean the pump filter and check the drain hose for kinks or a blockage, as these cause the same symptoms.
