Each layer of mesh traps fine droplets of grease as the fan pulls air up from the cooktop. Washed regularly, a metal filter lasts a long time, but it can eventually tear, bend out of shape or lose its frame, and some get so clogged that washing no longer clears them. A filter in that state slows the airflow, so the rangehood gets noisier and clears steam and smoke more slowly.
