This motor drives the fan that usually sits behind the freezer's rear panel. It draws air across the cold evaporator coil and pushes it out through the vents, including the duct that feeds the fresh food compartment. Once the motor stops, the freezer may still hold some cold near the coil, but the fridge side slowly warms, milk turns sooner and there's little or no airflow from the vents. A failing motor can also squeal, tick or grind before it quits. If the fan doesn't spin while the door switch is held in, and nothing is iced up around the blade, the motor is the likely fault.

Replacing the evaporator fan motor
Unplug the fridge and move the frozen food into an esky. The fan normally sits behind a panel at the back of the freezer, held by screws. If the area is packed with ice, let it thaw fully first, as heavy ice also points to a defrost fault.
