When to replace a gas cooktop knob
The knob is how you push and turn the gas valve to light and adjust each burner. Inside it, a shaped insert grips the valve spindle. Years of heat and cleaning can wear or split that insert, so the knob slips, turns loosely or pulls off in your hand. A worn knob makes it harder to set the flame precisely and to see at a glance whether a burner is fully off. A new knob restores a firm grip on the spindle.

Fitting the new knob
Check that every burner is off and the cooktop has cooled. Pull the old knob straight up off the valve spindle. Line up the flat on the spindle with the shape inside the new knob and press it down until it seats. Push and turn it to test the ignition and flame. If a valve feels stiff or you smell gas, call a licensed gas fitter.
