Westinghouse WHG640SC and WHG640WC gas cooktops, along with the WHG955SB and WHG953SB, use this genuine silver painted control knob, part 140175221070. It replaces the earlier number A17522107 and fits a 6mm D shaped valve spindle. If one knob has cracked, faded or keeps falling off, this puts your cooktop back to the way it left the factory.
Westinghouse gas burner knob loose or cracked
Each burner valve has a spindle with one flat side, and the knob grips that flat so turning the knob turns the valve. With daily use and heat rising from the burners, the plastic insert inside the knob can split or wear round. The knob then spins without moving the valve, slips when you press down to light the burner, or comes away in your hand when you lift a pot past it. The painted finish wears with cleaning too. A replacement knob fixes the grip and tidies up the look of the cooktop.

Replacing the knob
Turn all burners off and let the cooktop cool. Grip the old knob firmly and lift it straight off. Align the flat inside the new knob with the flat on the spindle, then push it home. Light each burner in turn to confirm the knob operates the valve cleanly. A gas smell or a valve that feels tight is work for a licensed gas fitter.
