Gas burner won't stay alight? Check the thermocouple
When the flame heats the thermocouple tip, it produces a tiny voltage that holds a magnet in the gas valve open. If the flame goes out, the voltage drops and the valve shuts off the gas. A failing thermocouple causes a burner that lights while you hold the knob in but goes out as soon as you let go, or one that cuts out at random mid-cook. Before replacing it, clean the tip and check it sits in the flame, since a bent or dirty tip gives the same symptoms.

In Australia, work on gas appliances must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. Turn off the gas at the isolation valve and switch off the power before work starts.
