The outer panel is the last layer of the door's glass pack. On a pyrolytic oven the door holds several panes with air gaps between them, which keeps the front cool enough to touch while the cavity runs at cleaning temperatures. Once the outer pane cracks, chips at the edge or breaks after a knock, that protection is compromised and the damage can spread with each heat cycle. Most people notice a crack line, a star-shaped chip near the handle or loose glass fragments. Changing the outer door glass
Switch the oven off at the wall and let it cool completely. Most doors are easiest to work on lifted off the hinges and laid flat on a towel. Take photos as you remove the trim and the inner panes so they go back in the same order and the same way round. Wear gloves when handling glass, clean each pane before reassembly and check the door closes evenly before running the oven.
