Uneven flames on a Westinghouse gas burner
A burner cap spreads the gas evenly around the burner so the flame forms a steady ring. Caps take a beating from heat, boil-overs and scrubbing. Once a cap warps, chips or corrodes, it no longer sits flat, and you will see a lopsided or lifting flame, yellow tips, gaps in the flame ring or a burner that is hard to light. A missing or badly seated cap also lets spills run into the burner. Replacing a damaged cap restores the flame pattern and helps the ignition spark reach the gas.

Seating the new cap
Turn every burner off and let the cooktop cool fully. Lift off the trivet and the old cap, then wipe the burner body and make sure the flame ports and igniter are clean and dry. Place the new outer cap so it sits level and does not rock. Light the burner and check for an even blue flame all the way round. If the flame stays uneven or you smell gas, stop using it and call a licensed gas fitter.
