On washers that use one, the recirculation pump draws water from the bottom of the tub and sends it back up into the drum so the load is soaked evenly with less water. It works separately from the drain pump, which only empties the machine. Changing the recirculation pump

Unplug the washer and turn off the taps. Drain any remaining water first, as the pump hoses will still hold some, and keep a shallow tray and towels handy. Take photos of the hose clamps and wiring plug, swap the pump across and make sure each clamp seats over its hose bead. Run a rinse and spin program and watch underneath for leaks.
