Electric hotplate not heating or only partly heating

A coil element is a sheathed heating wire wound into a flat spiral that usually sits over a drip bowl in the cooktop. The control switch cycles power to it to give you a range of heat settings. When the wire inside breaks, the hotplate stays cold, heats in only one section or glows unevenly. Other signs are a coil that has blistered or split, sparking or a burnt smell at the terminals, or a safety switch tripping when the hotplate is turned on. Loose or burnt terminal connections are also common, so check them while you're in there.
