Cooktop hotplate not heating
Each plate runs off its own control, and the element inside the plate turns that power into heat across its surface. Once the element fails, you'll find one plate that won't warm up while the others work, a plate that only gets warm on high, or a safety switch that trips when that plate is turned on. Cracks, a plate that has dropped in its trim ring, and scorched terminals underneath are other signs. Before buying, test the plate with a multimeter. An open circuit or a reading to earth means the plate is finished, while a healthy reading points to the control.

Replacing the hotplate
Switch the cooker off at the switchboard and let the plates cool completely. The plate is usually held from underneath, so the cooktop needs to be lifted or opened to reach the fixing and terminals. Label each wire before disconnecting it and reconnect them the same way. Fixed wiring work must be done by a licensed electrician. A new plate can smoke for a few minutes on first use while its coating cures.
