The upper element is the large coiled element in the roof of the oven. It does the grilling and adds top heat on programs that combine elements, so food browns evenly on top. Elements fail when the wire inside the metal sheath breaks, or when the sheath cracks and shorts to earth. You may see a section that stays dark while the rest glows, a blister or split in the metal, or a grill that does nothing at all. A shorted element often trips the safety switch or circuit breaker the moment the grill is switched on.
