When a Westinghouse gas cooktop knob needs replacing
The knob is what you push and turn to open the gas valve for each burner, and on most cooktops the same action fires the igniter. It slides onto the valve spindle, which usually has a flat side so the knob only fits one way. Knobs wear out more than people expect. The plastic insert can split, the grip can strip so the knob spins without moving the valve, or heat and harsh cleaners can fade and crack the finish. A loose knob that keeps falling off makes it hard to judge the flame setting, so it is worth changing.

Swapping the knob
Make sure every burner is off and the cooktop has cooled. Pull the old knob straight up off its spindle, without levering against the cooktop surface. Line up the flat inside the new knob with the flat on the spindle and press it firmly home. Light each burner to confirm the knob turns the valve smoothly through its full range. If you smell gas at any stage, turn off the supply and call a licensed gas fitter.
