Why replace a worn gas cooktop knob
The knob fits onto the gas valve spindle and is how you push, turn and set the flame on each burner. Over time the plastic insert that grips the flat on the spindle can split or wear round, so the knob spins without moving the valve or falls off when you pull it. Heat and harsh cleaners can also crack the body or fade the markings. A knob that doesn't grip properly makes it hard to control the flame, so swap it as soon as you notice it slipping.

Changing the knob
Make sure every burner is off and the cooktop is cool. Pull the old knob straight up off the spindle, without levering against the glass or stainless surface. Line up the flat inside the new knob with the flat on the spindle and press it firmly down. Check it turns smoothly and returns to the off position. Never use the cooktop with a knob missing.
