Broken paddle in an AEG washer drum?
Lifters are moulded ribs fixed around the inside of the drum. As the drum turns they carry clothes up the side and drop them back through the water, which is what does the washing in a front loader. A lifter can crack, snap off its clips or come loose, usually because a heavy item like a shoe or a coin has caught behind it. You might hear a clunk every time the drum turns, find clothes torn or snagged, see a gap or sharp edge inside the drum, or notice loads coming out less clean.

Swapping the lifter
Unplug the machine and open the door. Depending on the design, the lifter either slides along the drum and releases from clips, or is held by a screw or tabs from behind. Look closely at how the old one is attached before forcing anything, as broken clips are hard to retrieve. Clip or secure the new lifter firmly, then turn the drum by hand to check nothing catches.

Do I have to remove the drum to fit it?
Usually not. Many lifters fit from inside the drum through the door opening. Some designs are fixed from the outside of the drum, so check the old lifter before starting, and if it is fixed from behind, the job is best left to a technician.
