Chef oven not heating? Test the element
Inside an oven element is a coiled resistance wire packed in a metal tube. When power reaches it, the tube heats and warms the oven. Most elements fail by burning through, which leaves the oven cold or very slow to heat on any setting that relies on that element. Signs to look for are a break, a swelling or a scorched patch on the tube. If the safety switch trips the instant the oven is turned on, the element has probably shorted to earth. Test it with a multimeter before you buy.

Before you fit the element
Switch the oven off and isolate it at the switchboard. If the oven is hard-wired, have a licensed electrician do the job. Let the oven cool, remove the screws holding the element and draw it forward to reach the terminals. Photograph the wiring, compare the new element side by side with the old one, then connect it and check that it heats.
