Heat escaping from the oven door? Check the door seal

The door seal stops hot air leaking out between the oven door and the front of the cavity, so the heat stays with the food. After years of heating and cooling the gasket goes hard, flattens, splits or pulls away from its clips. Signs of a tired seal include hot air or steam escaping at the top of the door, knobs or the control panel running hotter than normal, longer cooking times, uneven browning near the door, and grease marks on the outside of the glass. A worn seal also makes the oven use more power.

Fitting the oven door seal

Let the oven cool fully and switch it off at the wall or isolator. Open the door wide, or lift it off if that gives easier access. Unhook the old seal, noting how the corners and clips sit, then start the new one at the top centre and press each clip home as you work around. Close the door and check the seal touches evenly all the way round.
